Hey GEHMS!
I’m so excited to be doing what I love. Writing! It is my happy place and my greatest sense of peace. I feel like being here with you all is like having my best friend at my side with a constant ear to listen, chiming in with an ever so joyous “girl ain’t that da truth” and laughing (or crying) hysterically to the stories that are my life. I thank you all for journeying with me. It’s been my pleasure to share.
As a woman who loves writing it’s easy to understand how very much I love words. I love the sounds of words, the study of the history of words, and the definition of words the most. Words are so important within language, and understanding how words & language come together in contexts seems to be a key to getting the lessons out of life and experience we truly need. I don’t know what I would do without understanding the power of words & what they truly mean. The Bible teaches much about the power our words have (it says essentially that life and death are held inside the power of our tongues: Proverbs 18:21) and I know we’ve all experienced its power in both good ways and bad. Words give meaning to life and we do well to treat them with honor & respect.
This brings me to our next topic under lesson#1 (Putting GOD First) and it has to do with the word: VALUE
[However, Before I move on, and as I like to say in every post if you haven’t read the previous posts go back and do so now, so you are connecting the dots of these conversations well.]
Since words are important to me you will learn that I like to define things a lot. Most times I do this generally with dictionary meanings (like Webster & Oxford dictionaries) but other ways I might choose would be linguistically or biblically. (I promise you’ll always know which angle I’m coming from).
Today I’m going to take a few definitions of the word “value” from Oxford Languages (an industry leader in dictionary publishing ) that I want to relate. These definitions are as follows:
the regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness of something.
consider (someone or something) to be important or beneficial; have a high opinion of.
Whew! Did y’all read that? Talk about the power of words and their meaning. My Goodness! Let’s break this down as it pertains to putting God first.
Does God deserve your time & attention?
Is God important to you?
What is GOD worth? (OMGee…This gives me goosebumps. As in we talkin about GOD here…) is there a number we can allot to HIS WORTH?
Is GOD useful to you in any way?
Are there benefits to having GOD in your life? Can you see them (the benefits I mean..? Name them?)
How is your opinion (as it pertains to GOD)
I mean be brutally honest…what do you think about GOD?
What are the words you speak about HIM?
GEHMS, I want to make some valid points in this post, but to be perfectly honest as I’m typing this blog my heart is getting full and I just want to burst into tears. I don’t think people VALUE GOD as much as he deserves. I know for a long time in my life (29 years to be exact) I did not. I didn’t because, before then, I did not have a personal relationship with God; what I had was a ruled relationship with God. I did not know how valuable a true relationship with God could be.
Today I understand, but it’s because I’ve worked in weakness, in failings, and in sufferings to answer all the questions above. I took time to get to know GOD himself and in getting to know him I learned “HIS VALUE” and then I learned “THE VALUE” of keeping him at the forefront of my life. I have so much to share on this topic (but y’all don’t sit more than 5 minutes to read so I’ll share in future posts)
For now, let me just end by saying this: no one can ever tell you the value of anything with sure-fire meaning. True! you can tell me something is valuable but its value doesn’t connect with me until I experience it for myself. Until I see it, feel it, hold it, interact with it on my terms and realize what it does to me and for me.
It’s the same way with GOD.
Until you experience him for yourself you will never know his value.
Experiencing God has to be more than following a set of religious rules and practices that tell us (as we follow them) we are living in a happy pleasing relationship with God & we are learning his value. In fact, experiencing God should be like any other relationship where “you need to personally get to know the person you are dealing with” and if you are at all aware of human propensities you know you don’t get to know people on your own terms; but theirs! GOD is no different, we must get to know him on his terms, and the only way to know him is through the way he chose to reveal himself to humanity.
This was through a particular group of people (a chosen people) that he interacted with in relationship for generations and through circumstances to reveal his ways, his character, and his love to all. It was through the birth of his son Jesus; who was God in human flesh come down to earth to give us himself in a seeable touchable form and to reveal the nature of God in real-time. It was through the sacrifice of Jesus’s death on a nasty cross to reconcile broken & sinful humanity back to God (because GOD is sinless and perfect and cannot dwell in a relationship with sinners). It was also through the Bible (Gods unique way of capturing his thoughts, his heart, his ways, his dealings with humans, his desires, and his promises of deliverance, hope, and eternal love for us all in) a book inspired by GOD to writers that were obedient to capture all he had to say.
Yeah getting to the value part of putting God first is no easy matter. We have much to ponder before we get into the meat of it.
I encourage you to take a look back at the questions I posed and sit with them in honesty.
Prepare your heart as we continue to talk more about the value of putting God first.
